Lent Feasting

By: Rev. Brandon Dirks

Many “give up” something for Lent. I say, forget that!

After all, isn’t life meant to be lived to the fullest, to sink your teeth into every experience and drain out every ounce from every moment? Big, destination vacations and experiences we want to make sure our kids have are a big priority.

Aren’t feasts more fun? Buffets are one of my favorite outings, especially if it is reasonably priced! Certainly we should start with dessert.

I work hard, so why not play hard too! Did you know that Continue reading

“A Call for Brave Christians”

A Call for Brave Christians

By: Rev. Brandon Dirks

Then Peter spoke up, ‘We have left everything to follow you!’  Mark 10:28

My faith story flows like a trip to the swimming hole in the spring.

Standing on water

One day, a long time ago, I am standing on the shore wondering if I really want to get in the water. But I’m here. I might as well see what the water feels like. So, I tentatively step in up to my toes, and immediately Continue reading

Whipping the Church

Whipping the Church

By: Rev. Brandon Dirks

“We too often flog the Church, when the whip should be laid on our own shoulders.” It’s amazing how words penned in the mid-1850’s (by Charles Spurgeon) are still, if not more, appropriate today.

We need a revival in the Church.

But not the kind of revival you are thinking about.

The Church has been an easy target for believers and non-believers alike.
“It’s too institutional.”
“It doesn’t do enough of (fill in the blank).”
“It’s time for someone else to teach Sunday School.”
“I don’t like this preacher” or “that doctrine” or “that person.”
“The music is too loud.”
“The children make too much noise.”
“I don’t have time for that project.”
“It doesn’t support my pet project.”
“The time is not convenient.”
Etc.…

Is it any wonder that the Church seems to have made Continue reading

My Pancakes and God

 My Pancakes and God

By: Rev. Brandon Dirks

Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he got up and went.  Acts 8:26

I’ve been going to Steak n Shake every Friday for pancakes for the last six months. (That’s why I don’t fit into my clothes too well lately.)

Tasty homemade pancakes with strawberries, blueberries and maple

I’ve been experimenting with intentionally putting myself out in the world as a follower of Christ and seeing what God does with me. And God took me up on the experiment!

My approach was Continue reading

When God Changed His Mind

When God Changed His Mind

By: Rev Brandon Dirks

If my last blog alienated half of you, this one will cause you to run away from me – once and for all!
Read Jonah Chapter 3… it may blow your mind.

“When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.” Jonah 3:10

God CHANGED his mind?
WHAT???!!!
That’s not the God I know. God does not change. God is the same yesterday, today, and
tomorrow. God is omniscient. God can’t change his mind! Can He? Continue reading

No More Public Worship

No More Public Worship

By: Rev. Brandon Dirks

This article WILL get me in trouble.  But I am already troubled by the emphasis on public worship.

It is not hard to look around the world at the overall Christian church and clearly see that the emphasis is on public worship.  We have cathedrals built for public worship and light and sound shows in contemporary worship.  Forms are filled out year after year reporting on “worship attendance.”  The local church calendar is centered around the days and times of worship services.  Churches invest a large portion of the tithes and offerings to staff and resources to build bigger, bolder, louder, more impactful services of public worship.  Usually the biggest complaints about the church are Continue reading
